Age rules and geolocation checks
Age and location are separate checks. An adult can still be outside an eligible state, and an eligible location does not remove identity or account requirements.
Minimum age depends on the model
Section titled “Minimum age depends on the model”State-regulated online casino gaming in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan requires age 21 or older. The same age floor applies across the regulated casino products discussed in those state guides.
Cash skill and sweepstakes platforms publish their own eligibility terms. Some use 18 as a general minimum, while particular states, promotions, or prize types can require 21. Do not rely on an app-store age rating. The account and contest rules control access to cash play.
Charitable and tribal bingo ages depend on the jurisdiction, game, venue, and whether minors may be present but not participate.
Identity checks
Section titled “Identity checks”An operator may ask for a legal name, birth date, address, Social Security number or part of it, and a government-issued identity document. A document request can occur at registration, deposit, contest entry, withdrawal, or after risk monitoring identifies a mismatch.
Use one account in your own name. Shared payment methods, inconsistent addresses, duplicate accounts, or altered documents can delay review and trigger an investigation under the platform rules.
What geolocation checks
Section titled “What geolocation checks”Licensed online casinos must verify physical presence inside the authorized boundary. They do not rely only on GPS or a billing address. A system may combine:
- Wi-Fi and network positioning;
- device location services;
- IP and network information;
- checks for VPNs, proxies, emulators, and remote-access software;
- desktop companion software or mobile permissions.
GeoComply is one widely used geolocation vendor, but the operator’s implementation and state approval determine the actual check. The vendor name is not proof that a site is licensed.
Troubleshooting a legitimate failure
Section titled “Troubleshooting a legitimate failure”- Confirm that the device is physically inside the permitted state and not near a border.
- Enable Wi-Fi and location permissions even when using a wired connection.
- Close VPN, proxy, screen-sharing, and remote-control software.
- Update the operator app and any required location component.
- Restart the check and use official support if it still fails.
Do not install an unofficial “location fix” or change device data. Bypassing controls can violate the terms and may be unlawful.
Skill apps and sweepstakes also use location rules
Section titled “Skill apps and sweepstakes also use location rules”A contest or promotion can block entry based on state, county, or other jurisdiction even without a casino geolocation mandate. Some platforms check at registration and again at paid entry or redemption. A free game may open even when the current rules do not permit that account to enter for or redeem value.
Privacy questions to ask
Section titled “Privacy questions to ask”Read the privacy notice for the data collected, vendor sharing, retention, and account-deletion process. Install only the official app or location component linked by the operator. A legitimate check does not require giving a support agent remote control of the device.
